There are two simple and consistent fruits that we have seen in student led discipleship. Today we will hit on the first benefit, and next Tuesday we will explore the second one.
The first is the reproduction of disciple makers. Each year, we have more applicants to be LUG Heads (the name for our High School students who disciple middle school students) than the year before. When we ask freshman why they want to become LUG Heads, the answer is almost always the same: “I want to have the same impact on middle schoolers that my LUG Head had on me.”
A middle school student believes that a high school student is the coolest person in the world. When a high school student befriends and invests in a middle schooler, it truly rocks their world. They intently listen to what the high school student teaches and are able to relate well to their place in life. When they see an older student pursuing God and living their life missionally, they want the same thing for themselves.
Over the course of a decade, the LUG program has grown from having around 40 people to 800 people per week. Yes there are attractional elements at LUG, but these elements only get people in the door. The thing that keeps people coming back and enables sustained growth is discipleship.
